Our devotions in class for the next few months are intended to define what a Christian is and what he or she believes. We have been taking as our primary source the Westminster Shorter Catechism, though working slightly out of order, we started by asking the question, “who is God?”
So far, we have established that the Christian believes that God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable. This week we discussed that he was these things in his being and His wisdom. In His being, we understand God to be Spirit in that He does not possess a created body (more about Christ on a later study), He is infinite and eternal in His being in that He is eternally preexistent, having no beginning or end, and no limit to the expanse of His being. Finally, He is unchangeable in His being in that He is not affected by time or age, does not change form or substance throughout time, and will not change in being for the rest of eternity. The two main passages we discussed were Exodus 3:14 andRomans 11:33-34.
The question we can ponder for further study is this: if I am a believer, how does knowing that God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable in His being affect my day to day life? How do I approach work and family differently knowing this truth?
If I am not a Christian, and if these things are true about God, how does that affect my view and thinking as well?
Looking forward to dialogue,
Sensei
