Ok, so that was too short. Monotheism is at the very cornerstone of western thought, so it is critical that we understand why it’s important to believe in only one God. For the Christian, we believe that God is the only God because, well, He told us so in the Bible. For the non-Christian, it’s a little trickier. What it boils down to is faith, however. The critical point of the issue is understanding that you cannot have it both ways; there can’t be this “many roads” idea that lead to many Gods AND have some consistency within the monotheistic religions. One must be true, and one must be false.
So, that leads to our discussion question: why is polytheism and universalism so attractive to us? What is it about believing in mutliple ways or Gods that is appealing to us?
