What is karate? This question divides instructors, students, organizations, and perhaps even families in our current era. Some contend it is a sport, some an art, some a stress reliever. I would contend it transcends all those things, which are a part of what karate is, but not the whole. I believe Karate is a way of life, a means of discipline intended to deepen those things already present in its participants, or introduce character and the demands of living a life rooted in discipline. The things we will talk about here will be done so for the purpose of helping define two basic questions:
1. What is karate?
2. How do we define Christian Martial Arts?
Both of these questions drive the students in my class, and this blog is devoted to them.
A couple of ground rules:
1. Debate is ok, arguing is not. If you cannot post a comment with a gentle spirit, then please refrain from posting until you can do so. Upon receiving the black belt, part of the creed my students take is “when my anger goes out, I shall withdraw my hand. When my hand goes out, I shall withdraw my anger.” please apply that principle here.
2. No foul or offensive language. I firmly believe, regardless of religious conviction, that the use of foul language simply indicates a weak vocabulary and lack of both tact and intellectual motivation. If it sounds offensive, refer back to the previous point, and refrain.
3. Interact! I look forward to healthy conversation here, and hope to answer many questions we don’t have time for in class. I will also be posting the contents of our weekly devotion time here, so feel free to ask questions/post comments about it also.
That’s it! I look forward to discussion here, and am excited about providing some clarity as well as definition.
